At the end of February I was lucky enough to have an artist residency. A place all my own to paint to my heart’s delight. As the days got longer and just a bit warmer, my thoughts went to spring.
Along with its sister painting, Peeking into a Spring Garden, Wondering What Spring Will Hold was one of the last paintings I made. The window-like quality is made up of mono prints with bits of nature I found on my walks through the neighborhood and park.
For this painting, I chose a soft, butter yellow background and printed using ranges of purple. Like its sister painting, the flower image was inspired by a sweet book of Japanese floral watercolors and inks. I admire Japanese art for its simplicity of lines.
I wanted this painting to be fresh, meditative and imperfect—that’s why the mono prints aren’t perfectly aligned. Nature is imperfect, our lives are imperfect, and so I enjoy the imperfect spacing between the images.
It’s ready to hang in a beloved space. Its 1” white edges keep it crisp, and no need to frame, although, of course you can!
